Tesla's Full Self-Driving Now Intervenes During Manual Driving to Prevent Collisions

Tesla announced on 4 September 2026 the rollout of Full Self-Driving Supervised v14.3.9, introducing a new active safety feature set that allows the system to intervene automatically when an imminent collision is detected. The feature can activate even during manual driving when Automatic Emergency Braking may prove insufficient.

The system engages under three primary scenarios: when a collision threat exists and braking alone cannot prevent impact, when heavy driver distraction is detected, or when FSD has been accidentally disengaged. In these situations, the system can coordinate steering, braking, and acceleration to execute an evasive maneuver, including lane changes or movement toward a road shoulder when conditions permit. Following the emergency action, the vehicle alerts the driver and requests return to manual control.

This capability differs fundamentally from conventional AEB systems that apply brakes in a straight line. Instead, Tesla's system evaluates whether a safe path exists before executing the maneuver. The feature operates using the same vision stack already deployed in v14 software, functioning as a background safety net rather than relying solely on emergency braking once manual control is relinquished.

The rollout began shortly after the announcement, though Tesla has not disclosed whether the feature can be disabled or disclosed the expected false-positive rate. The system requires an active FSD subscription or purchase and does not render the vehicle unsupervised. Drivers retain full responsibility for vehicle operation.
