Routine service is easy… body parts are the pain

Field reality: routine service parts (filters, brake pads, fluids) are generally available because Chinese OEMs share Tier-1 suppliers (Bosch, Aisin, ZF, Continental) and parts can be cross-referenced. The real pain is collision/body parts (bumpers, lights, glass, doors) for new Chinese models: often factory-only from China, with 2-week to 3-month waits depending on brand and distributor. The single-distributor model is the bottleneck — if the agent is out of stock there is no second official source. Bright spots: Omoda&Jaecoo run a 12,000 sqm parts hub in JAFZA with 24–48h regional delivery; Chery/Sanabel have a 600 sqm parts store in Jeddah; Exeed announced a 12,000 m2 parts center in Qatar. For grey/China-spec imports: no warranty and no official parts channel — owners rely on specialists (EVS, Smart Garage) or direct-from-China ordering, noting that electronic modules often need dealer-level programming/activation.

Consumables

Cabin AC filter

The most-replaced consumable in the Gulf due to dust — every 10–15k km or less. Available for high-volume models (Atto 3, MG, Haval) at dealer and aftermarket; newer models (Zeekr, Deepal) may need pre-ordering. A clogged filter = noticeably weak AC in summer.

12V auxiliary battery

EVs still depend on a 12V battery for systems. Big screens and always-on tech in Chinese cars drain it fast — workshops report only 12–18 months life in Gulf heat. Note: dealer warranty on the 12V battery is very short (Jetour KSA example: 12 months / 20,000 km only).

AC refrigerant (R134a / R1234yf)

Modern Chinese cars mostly use R134a, some R1234yf — available at every Gulf workshop. Critical for EVs: the electric AC compressor also cools the battery on some models, so any refrigerant leak affects battery cooling and fast-charging in summer. Annual pre-summer check is essential.

Tyres for heavy EVs

Chinese EVs are heavy (Zeekr 001 ≈ 2.3t, Denza D9, Li L9) and need high load-rated (XL/HL) tyres, some in EV-specific sizes. Common sizes (18–19 in) are stocked instantly in Dubai/Riyadh; large sizes (21–22 in, e.g. Zeekr 001, Avatr 11) are scarcer and may need ordering. Weight + instant torque = faster wear, and Gulf heat shortens tyre life.

Warranty traps

  • Charging rule: LFP owner manuals (e.g. BYD Blade) allow — even encourage — periodic 100% charges for BMS calibration, but warn against repeated deep discharge below 10–20% and against storing the car for weeks at 0% or 100%; ignoring this can be used to reject a battery warranty claim.

  • Out-of-network service: most Chinese-brand GCC warranties require scheduled maintenance at authorized centers; repairs at unauthorized workshops or non-genuine parts void the warranty (explicit in Jetour KSA's warranty document).

  • Grey imports: a China-spec car bought at Ras Al Khor or an import showroom has zero local factory warranty — no official parts, no guaranteed OTA updates, and some need app/maps activation. Realistic fix: third-party extended warranty (EVS, GE Warranty) after inspection.

  • Headline long warranties (10yr/1M km at Jetour, Omoda&Jaecoo, Tank) usually cover engine/powertrain, first owner only, and exclude wear items, glass, paint — the 12V battery at Jetour, for example, is covered for just 12 months.

  • EV battery warranty has a degradation threshold (typically 70% of original capacity within 8 years) — it is not a replacement for any range loss; commercial use (ride-hailing/taxi) can slash coverage (Jetour doc: commercial use cuts some component coverage from 72 to 12 months).
