Volkswagen Launches First LiDAR-Equipped Electric SUV in China

FAW-Volkswagen introduced the ID. AURA T6 on 20 September 2026, marking Volkswagen's first all-electric SUV to integrate LiDAR technology. The five-seat mid-size model launches in four configurations priced from 129,900 yuan to 166,900 yuan, representing a reduction of 3,000 to 10,000 yuan compared to pre-sales pricing that commenced on 28 August.

The two premium variants—660 Max and 660 Ultra—incorporate a 192-channel LiDAR system paired with a Horizon Robotics Journey 6H processor delivering 420 TOPS of computing power. The setup enables urban and highway navigation-on-autopilot functionality alongside comprehensive parking-assistance capabilities, developed jointly by Carizon, Volkswagen's partnership with ADAS provider Horizon Robotics.

The vehicle employs the CEA electronic and electrical architecture developed collaboratively by Volkswagen and Xpeng, integrating centralized computing with zonal control. This platform supports over-the-air updates, sentry mode and remote operation. The cabin features a 15.6-inch central touchscreen, 10.25-inch instrument panel and 25.8-inch augmented-reality head-up display with 4-nanometer chip technology enabling on-device AI model deployment.

All variants utilize a single electric motor producing 170 kW (228 horsepower) with battery options of 59.9 kWh and 77.5 kWh, sourced from CATL. These configurations deliver CLTC ranges of 540 and 660 kilometers respectively. The ID. AURA T6 measures 4,811 mm long, 1,879 mm wide and 1,648 mm tall with a 2,836 mm wheelbase, offering 90 liters of front storage and 576 liters of rear cargo space, expandable to 1,796 liters.
